If someone had a misfortune, and you wanted to show sincere concern, it was common to start the sentence with "That's a shame", or "It's a shame". I grew up in South Africa, I now live in Calgary, Canada and have many similar stories. One was when we first came to Calgary I went into WalMart and asked for a "dustbin" bag and no-one knew what I wanted I left empty handed - until I found out its a "garbage" bag.
